three easy questions

My son Benjamin likes to besiege us with questions. I am constantly racking my brains to come up with intelligent answers. Often I just don't know. I'm concerned that this 3-year-old child of mine may be considerably brighter than his dear mother.

Today I had some staggering questions thrown at me during the course of the day:

1) "What's at the edge of the world?"

2) Who made the world?

3) How do babies start to grow?

Whew! I'm exhausted from thinking and explaining and straining my poor mind. What will it be like when this boy is 7? Or 10? Or, Lord help me, 13???? (Come to think of it, he probably will be barely speaking to me at 13, so that'll get me off the hook)

I'd better go to bed now. It all starts again around 6 am tomorrow. Goodnight!

Your son's questions remind me of a story. One day this little boy asked his mother, "Where do I come from?" The mother proceded to give a detailed explanation on how babies are conceived and about relations between men and women, the usual birds-and-bees pep talk. After lecturing for 30 minutes, the kid turns to the mother with an exasperated look on his face and says, "No, I meant, what town was I born in?"

The answers to the questions might be:

1) "What's at the edge of the world?"
A) There is no edge; it just goes around and around

2) "Who made the world?"
A) I don't know, but I'm glad we live here because it's so pretty

3) "How do babies start to grow?"
A) One cell at a time until we get a boy like you, and aren't we glad

Please use my answers only as an example. And, smile, children do only get smarter and smarter as they get older. Hopefully, they will also express their love more and more. Cherish them every day; whether they are good, bad, insolent, funny, rude, loud, or just plain smart-mouthed.

My son is 9 and still asking those sorts of questions! If I don't know the answer, I take him to the library for a book so he can work it out for himself!!! (I am a bad mother).

HA-HA you think he will stop asking when he is 13. Oh, No! He will still ask, you will answer, then he will argue. You will end up saying, "So why did you ask me in the first place?"
