my little super-heroes

Do you suppose they were contemplating trying to fly? That could have been really messy.

As it happens, no one flew or fell. Ben informed me that I was Super-Mum, which I chose to take as an affirmation of my super parenting skills (cough). I realise Ben would be unlikely to come up with the concept of Doing-The-Best-I-Can-And-Sometimes-Stuffing-It-Up-Anyway-Mum. But Super-Mum sounds so.... strong and powerful. It has a great ring to it!

Yesterday I was an inattentive mother. I didn't spend much time with my kids - I wanted to read, to talk to my friends, to get certain jobs done. I was being selfish, and I don't like myself much like that. I know it's forgivable to be a dodgy mother for one day, but today I want to do better.

Parenting is hard work.

You are right, Super Mum. Parenting is, indeed, hard work.

I am constantly reminded of this fact every time they forget to flush the darned toilet.

But it's all worth it with the giggles, hugs and smiles.

(But it would be even better if they actually remembered something I am constantly nagging them about!)

Taking care of yourself is taking care of your kids.

I agree with John Cowart. Taking care of yourself is taking care of your kids.

Well, you took them to the beach, that ought to count for several days of selfish neglect on your part!

And it actually is good for them, teaches them to be self-sufficient and independent.

Just kidding around of course! I am sure you are the perfect mom, balancing your busy schedule with work and home, and your kids will turn out well-rounded and successful. Or not. Either way - you do the best you can, as John said - take care of yourself - and hope for the best.

Enjoy it while it lasts and keep in mind that this age is the easy part, just wait... it will get worse before it gets better. Sorry about that - but then it REALLY gets better when you have grandkids!

I am sure that in the time you took for yourself that you did not ignore them as much as you think. All good parents have the guilt trip on not spending every minute with the children. You are a loving mum and your kids know it!

yes, it is hard work. I say, don't give yourself such a hard time. I say yesterday was a sanity saver and a recharging for Super Mum. I say it is better to take a break occasionally, though you feel inattentive, than to try to be SuperMom all the time and turn into the Incredible Hulk. Cute little superheroes. We had insects, one butterfly and one bumblebee.

Your cute little super heros love you whether you are a super-mum or choose to take one day for yourself and are not so attentive.

Being a mum is certainly the hardest job you will ever have....
And the most meaningful & rewarding.

...and then they turn into teens.

Parenting IS hard work - made even harder due to lack of time off, holidays, sick leave, flex time, study leave or chances to change offices and departments!!!!

Yes, I think I will join your club!! If I don't join someone will send me - namely my kids!!!

I am guilty as well. Sometimes I just need to get something accomplished.

kids need to see that super Moms have other interest to. Nothing wrong with modeling reading....

As another Super-Stuff-Up Mum, I am so glad I found your blog.

Jellyhead what can I say, parenting is really hard work, heck being an uncle is hard enough. I mean with all the things you've got to remember like when their friends birthday's are so that they don't forget, helping to get the gifts and cards sorted out, making sure they got everything. If you can read minds that's a bonus. I have enough trouble keeping track of what Im meant to be doing without trying to keep track of what my nephew is meant to be upto etc..

I'm sure they had plenty of fun entertaining themselves. You were there making sure no harm came to them while you took a little time for yourself. Nothing at all wrong with that. It's necessary for a healthy supermum! I think Ben probably meant you ARE super, Mum :) As I know you are :)
I love that picture!
